Verity Children's Privacy (COPPA) Addendum
Effective Date: May 29, 2026
This Children's Privacy (COPPA) Addendum supplements the Verity Privacy Policy and specifically explains how Verity collects, uses, stores, and protects information relating to children.
If there is any conflict between this Addendum and the Privacy Policy, this Addendum controls with respect to children's information.
1. Purpose
Verity is an educational literacy platform designed for students in grades 3-8.
Many users of Verity are under the age of 13.
Because of this, Verity is designed to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA"), applicable U.S. state privacy laws, Canadian privacy laws, and other laws governing the protection of children's information.
Verity requires parental consent before collecting or processing children's information.
2. Who May Create a Child Account
Only a parent or legal guardian may create a child profile.
Children may not independently register for Verity accounts.
The parent account serves as the administrator of all associated child profiles.
Parents remain responsible for:
- Providing accurate information
- Managing child access
- Reviewing educational activity
- Monitoring account usage
- Exercising privacy rights on behalf of the child
3. Information We Collect About Children
Verity limits data collection to information reasonably necessary to provide literacy instruction and educational feedback.
Child Profile Information
We may collect:
- First name
- Grade level
- Country
- State, province, or territory
We intentionally avoid collecting unnecessary personal information from children.
Educational Information
Verity may collect:
Calibration Responses
Responses submitted during initial reading and writing assessments used to determine a student's instructional level.
Reading Responses
Responses submitted during reading comprehension activities, including:
- Multiple-choice answers
- Short-answer responses
- Critical reasoning exercises
Writing Responses
Responses submitted during writing exercises, including:
- Paragraph writing
- Essay writing
- Reflection prompts
- Literacy assessments
Educational Feedback
Feedback generated through Verity's educational systems and AI tools.
Progress Information
Educational metrics generated by Verity, including:
- Reading proficiency indicators
- Writing proficiency indicators
- Calibration results
- Recalibration results
- Growth measurements
- Educational progress history
4. Information We Do Not Intentionally Collect
Verity does not intentionally request or require children to provide:
- Last names
- Home addresses
- Phone numbers
- Personal email addresses
- Government identification numbers
- Social insurance or social security numbers
- Financial information
- Biometric information
- Precise geolocation information
- Photographs
- Audio recordings
- Video recordings
If such information is submitted unintentionally, Verity may remove it when reasonably practicable.
5. Educational Purpose of Collection
Children's information is collected solely to provide educational services.
Examples include:
- Personalizing literacy exercises
- Measuring reading growth
- Measuring writing growth
- Providing educational feedback
- Adjusting difficulty levels
- Tracking long-term progress
- Supporting recalibration assessments
Children's information is not used for advertising purposes.
6. Literacy Performance Indicators
Verity generates educational performance indicators from student responses.
Examples may include:
- Below grade expectations
- At grade expectations
- Above grade expectations
Additional indicators may be created to support instructional personalization and educational progress tracking.
These indicators are educational tools only.
They are not intended to:
- Diagnose learning disabilities
- Determine school placement
- Replace professional educational evaluations
- Replace professional psychological assessments
7. Artificial Intelligence Processing
Verity uses artificial intelligence tools to assist with literacy instruction.
Currently, Verity utilizes Anthropic's Claude API.
AI systems may be used to:
- Analyze reading responses
- Analyze writing responses
- Generate educational feedback
- Assess literacy performance
- Recommend exercise difficulty
- Support educational personalization
AI-generated feedback is intended to assist learning and should not be considered professional educational, medical, psychological, or legal advice.
8. AI Training Restrictions
Child submissions processed through Anthropic's API are not used to train Anthropic's public AI models.
Verity does not permit third-party AI providers to use children's submissions for public model training.
9. Verifiable Parental Consent
Verity obtains parental consent before processing child information.
Verity currently uses the Federal Trade Commission's "email plus" consent method.
The process generally includes:
- Parent account registration.
- Email verification.
- Consent confirmation.
- Child profile creation.
- Access to educational features.
No educational processing, literacy assessment, or AI-generated feedback occurs until parental consent has been provided.
10. Parent Rights
Parents have the right to:
- Review child information
- Review educational responses
- Review literacy assessments
- Review AI-generated feedback
- Correct information
- Delete information
- Revoke consent
These rights may be exercised through the parent dashboard or by contacting Verity directly.
11. Deletion Requests
Parents may request deletion of child information at any time.
Upon deletion:
- Child profiles are removed from active systems.
- Educational records are removed from active databases.
- Access to the profile is terminated.
Certain information may temporarily remain in secure backup systems until backup expiration processes are completed.
12. Support Access
Authorized Verity personnel may access child information when reasonably necessary to:
- Provide customer support
- Investigate technical issues
- Ensure service quality
- Maintain security
- Comply with legal obligations
Access is limited to authorized personnel with a legitimate business need.
13. No Advertising
Verity does not display third-party advertising to children. Verity does not use children's information for targeted advertising. Verity does not share children's information for advertising purposes.
14. No Sale of Children's Information
Verity does not sell children's personal information.
Verity does not exchange children's information for monetary consideration or advertising benefits.
15. No Public Communication Features
Children cannot:
- Communicate with other users
- Participate in forums
- Maintain public profiles
- Publicly post content
- Share content publicly through Verity
Verity is an educational platform and not a social networking service.
16. Data Security
Verity uses reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect children's information.
These safeguards may include:
- Authentication controls
- Access restrictions
- Encryption in transit
- Monitoring and logging
- Cloud infrastructure security
No system can guarantee absolute security.
17. International Data Processing
Verity operates from Canada.
Information may be processed in:
- Canada
- United States
through Verity and its service providers.
Parents consent to these transfers by using the Service.
